A Life Well Lived

This week I lost my aunt.

It was one of the hardest things to believe.  But I took time to believe that she has died.  I thought in my heart  that she was  'immortal'.

 

Her love for us was huge.  She attended  every function which I could remember. 

She was so hardworking on her farm, that people admired her a lot.

She was also a strong Christian who learned to read and write at an advanced age.  All she wanted to do was read her Bible.

Graduation Is Upon Us

Things have been challenging and hectic for me here as we prepared for my mother's graduation in one city, and as I finalized the defence of my thesis in yet another city. It is also an exciting time for us all.  My mama has been studying for her theology degree, through an extension program and she has now achieved her goal!

It was a happy day for her, and for us, as we watched her finish her years of dedicated study and receive her diploma. Family members came from miles away.  After the ceremony, we had soda and lunch to mark this big event.

Now I'm very busy trying to finish my own thesis.  I've defended it in yet a third town (different one from where I live and from where my mama had her ceremony).  The professors who sat on the board to hear the students defend their works have come from yet another city in the country of Uganda.  Their travels and my own travels have really added to the thesis costs and to living costs in these final stages of my studies.

Please keep me in prayer for the funds needed to cover my final trip to Uganda and for my moving fees back to my hometown.  It is a busy, exciting and stressful time for me.  I've had to rely on prayer and faith to get this far and I'm not quite finished yet.  More news later. Blessings.

Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. And let endurance have its perfect result, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.

Linet Goes to Hospital

Hello friends,

I have finally taken the gal who is sick in the mouth to the hospital (read more here).  Please continue to pray for the doctors as they continue to examine her.

Update:  Little Linet had her long teeth in front removed and her mouth cleaned. Please continue praying as we needs funds to fix her cleft palate.

Update:  We took Little Linet for an evaluation at the Missions Hospital to see if she is a good candidate for surgery.  We give praise to God that she has passed the evaluation. Now we need to focus on raising funds for her. Please pray with us and join with us with your finances if you can.

Short Update on Missions

Hello,

Edwin and I will be going to Nairobi in about two days for further cancer treatment.  Last Friday we went for some check up and tests.

At the same please pray for me, and for Kipngeno as we are both in school. You might remember Kipngeno is studying so he can become a doctor.

He still needs a lot of financial support.  He needs the balance of lodging costs and tuition for this semester which is about $500 US dollars. We paid his room for two months and the school has been very caring for him.

Missionary Eva

Hello friends,

I have some words to encourage you this week.

At 59 years of age, Mrs Eva Tonui is a self-sponsored missionary to an unreached people group in Kenya. She speaks their language and was working with her husband in this outreach from 1976 to 1990's.

 

After the demise of her husband, she stayed home, as many would do, caring for their little children. When the kids were of age the calling to return to a place where her husband served became more more direct to her.   She shared with friends about this calling but no one could understand her.

One day she set out and travelled there alone.  She slept for 3 nights along the way but finally found joy serving the Pokot people.  She runs a clinic, has a church that is overflowing, and has rescued over 20 girls from forced circumcision and early marriages. ( Girls are married off at the age of 12 in the community).  Some of the children she has helped are now in school in Kericho and Bomet Districts.

I must say, I was so fortunate to meet Eva.  She is so athletic and walks many many kilometers each day.

 Please pray for her and her heart for the unreached people groups in Kenya.

Floods Cause Loss of Life and Lots of Damage

"Three people are missing while close to 40 families have been left homeless in Nakuru town after their homes were swept by raging floods on Saturday night." These words were the opening words to an article in the paper on Sunday.

So much damage has been done by the heavy rains and floods.

I survey the damage. You can see the people have tried to build up the land with sand bags but mother nature was too powerful.

The land has just been swept away.

 

 

This house has been destroyed and sludge from the flood has entered.

 

This mama has to make the best of her situation.

The side of this man's house has been obliterated.

 

This house can no longer be lived in.

More garbage has been deposited in the slums by the running waters of the floods.

These people are very poor and have so little.  The recent on-going floods have taken away the little bit that they have.  In some cases, lives have been lost.

 What can be done for them except that good people feel moved to help.

Mama Linet Smiles

Hi friends,

I was able to visit Mama Linet again a few days ago and give her some help for school needs. Please continue to pray for her and her family's needs to be met. Also pray for me as I've lost my camera which I need to document our work to bring hope to the needy through Missions of Hope.

Daily Concerns of Life at the IDP Camp

 Hello friends, 

I had a short visit to the Internally Displaced People's (IDP) camp and gave them a few books  before the schools open.  There  is so much they need but nonetheless it was so great to be able to visit with the people I have met some time back.

All children love a treat and these ones are no different. They concentrate on opening their candy.

The children are so happy to receive their treats and booklets for school.

                                   Flour for chapatis and maize flour for ugali  is needed.

 

Blankets are also much needed.

Please continue to pray for these dear ones as they continue to trust in the Lord for their movement to the new land  that was promised by the government. Their complaint was that some of their names were not on the list.  I could not independently verify that but continue to pray for these dear ones.  

Not only are they dealing with their concerns about moving, but the rains are becoming too much for their worn out and leaking  tents so they are trying to keep warm.

This little girl is trying to keep warm and dry with her coat and boots but the tents are leaking.

The little one eagerly grabs the blanket.

We hope to take more books and other supplies this week.

Our Outreach to the Slums

Hello,

We had a short time this week where we visited with Linet and her family to check on their progress.

I was so excited to see them continuing to grow and fellowship in the Lord.

Here is little Linet. She still needs cleft palate surgery.

Here is Mama Linet holding the baby. You might remember that we helped her start a charcoal business but business has been slow.

Here is her little girl. We are so blessed to see her healthy and pray that some day she will get the surgery she needs.

The other woman in the area are also happy to get a mosquito net.

We had also visited those who really needed help in this slum area. especially during this time of heavy rains.

We gave out some mosquito nets to protect the kids in this area who need lots of help.  Blankets are really needed too as it is very cold in the slum areas during the rain.

They will use their nets to protect against mosquito bites and malaria. They need blankets to protect against the cold.

Continue to pray for these dear ones as they continue to thank the Lord for his provisions.

Where Things Are At With Edwin

Hello friends,

Thank you for your continued support and prayers. It has been a busy time for me since I wrote you last as I am finalizing my research thesis and hope to finish very soon. Please keep me in prayer.

I also wanted to share an update with you on Edwin; the young man who we have been helping to get treatment for chronic myeloid leukemia.

We had another check up in Nairobi last week as well as getting more medicine for his cancer treatment.

While we were in Nairobi we were so blessed to have several students from the village come by and lend their moral support and encouragement to Edwin. These are village men who are now studying in Nairobi.

We are encouraged by the doctor's report. Edwin's immune system is responding well to treatment so far. We give praise to God for this encouraging report.  We also want to thank you so much for your prayer support and your financial support.

Our next trip to Nairobi will be in early June. We thank you in advance if you are able to help with any of the needs (travel, food, shelter). God bless you and please continue to pray.
